How Air Fryer to Oven Conversion Works

Converting an air fryer recipe to a conventional oven reverses the usual rule: add 25°F (about 15°C) to the temperature and add roughly 25% to the cooking time. An air fryer recipe that says 375°F for 16 minutes becomes 400°F for about 20 minutes in a conventional oven. The oven needs the extra heat and time because its still air transfers heat more slowly than the fast moving air inside an air fryer basket.

If your target is a fan or convection oven rather than a conventional one, keep the temperature the same as the air fryer setting and only extend the time by about 15%. Fan ovens sit between conventional ovens and air fryers in cooking power, so the gap to bridge is smaller. The calculator above handles both cases.

One texture note worth knowing: food converted from air fryer to oven will cook through correctly but will not crisp quite as hard, because a full size oven cannot match the air velocity of a basket. For breaded and fried style foods, place them on a wire rack over a baking sheet so air reaches the underside, and finish with 2 minutes under the broiler or grill if you want extra crunch.

Air Fryer to Oven Conversion: Frequently Asked Questions

Add 25°F (about 15°C) to the air fryer temperature and increase the cooking time by roughly 25%. So an air fryer recipe at 375°F for 16 minutes becomes 400°F for about 20 minutes in a conventional oven.

An air fryer recipe at 400°F converts to 425°F in a conventional oven, with about 25% more cooking time. In a fan oven, keep 400°F and add around 15% more time.

Not quite, because a conventional oven cannot match the air velocity of an air fryer basket. Cook the food on a wire rack so air reaches all sides, and finish under the broiler or grill for a couple of minutes to close the crispiness gap.

The usual reasons are cooking for a crowd that will not fit in a basket, following an air fryer recipe when you do not own one, or freeing up the air fryer while another dish uses it. The conversion lets any air fryer recipe work in a standard kitchen.
