How Toaster Oven Recipes Convert

A basic toaster oven is a conventional oven shrunk to countertop size: heating elements top and bottom, still air in between. Its recipes therefore convert with nearly the standard oven rule, drop 25°F, but with a smaller time cut of about 15% instead of 20%. The reason is that toaster ovens already benefit from their small cavity; food sits close to the elements and cooks a touch faster than in a full size oven, so part of the air fryer's speed advantage is already priced in.

Modern toaster ovens complicate the label. Many now include convection fans, and some are sold as "air fryer toaster ovens" with an air fry mode. If your recipe used one of those modes, the appliance was already circulating air, and the conversion becomes minimal: same temperature, trim about 10% of the time, done. The calculator above handles both cases with the mode selector.

Which Should You Actually Use?

Where both appliances sit on the counter, the split is practical. The basket air fryer wins for anything loose that benefits from shaking, fries, wings, sprouts, nuggets, and delivers harder crisping from its concentrated airflow. The toaster oven wins for toast, open sandwiches, flat trays of cookies, and anything too wide for a basket. For a recipe that works in either, the air fryer version typically finishes 2 to 4 minutes sooner and crispier; the toaster oven version browns more gently and fits more.

Toaster Oven to Air Fryer: Frequently Asked Questions

For standard bake mode recipes, reduce the temperature by 25°F and the time by about 15%. A toaster oven recipe at 400°F for 15 minutes becomes 375°F for about 13 minutes in the air fryer. Convection mode recipes convert with the same temperature and only 10% less time.

Close but not identical. Air fryer toaster ovens circulate air across a wider, shallower space, so they crisp slightly less aggressively than a basket but fit more food. Recipes written for one work in the other with a minute or two of adjustment either way.

The fan. A standard toaster oven relies on still air and radiant heat from its elements, while the air fryer forces hot air across the food at speed. Moving air transfers heat far faster than still air at the same temperature, which is the entire principle air fryers are built on.

Mostly yes, with the same temperature and a check a few minutes early, since the small cavity runs slightly hot. If your real goal is the air fryer, skip the middle step and convert the oven recipe directly with the standard rule: 25°F lower and 20% less time.
