Why Microwave Conversion Is Not Like Oven Conversion
Oven to air fryer conversion is a small adjustment between two forms of dry heat. Microwave to air fryer is a change of physics. A microwave excites water molecules inside the food, heating it from within in minutes but leaving surfaces soft and steamy. An air fryer heats from the outside in with hot moving air, slower to reach the centre but capable of making surfaces crisp. That is why there is no temperature to convert, a microwave has none in the oven sense, and why the time multiplies instead of shrinking.
The working rule: multiply the microwave time by 2.5 to 3 and run the air fryer at 350 to 400°F depending on the food. A frozen snack with a 4 minute microwave instruction takes about 11 to 12 minutes at 375°F. It is slower, but the trade is the entire point: what comes out of the microwave limp comes out of the air fryer crisp. For anything with a pastry, batter or breadcrumb exterior, the air fryer version is closer to the original fried or baked product than the microwave version will ever be.
When to Keep Using the Microwave
Honesty helps here: the microwave still wins for soups, stews, rice, steamed vegetables, mugs of anything and pure speed reheating where texture does not matter. The air fryer wins whenever crispness matters or the food was originally fried, baked or roasted. A practical combination for jacket potatoes and thick leftovers is 3 to 4 minutes in the microwave to heat the centre, then 5 to 6 minutes in the air fryer at 400°F to finish the outside, faster than either appliance alone at full quality.
Microwave to Air Fryer Conversion Chart
Common microwave foods with their air fryer equivalents.
| Food | Microwave (1000W) | Air Fryer | Why Convert |
|---|---|---|---|
| Leftover pizza (2 slices) | 1 to 2 min | 375°F / 4 to 5 min | Crisp base instead of chewy |
| Chicken nuggets (frozen) | 3 to 4 min | 375°F / 10 to 12 min | Actually crunchy coating |
| Leftover fries | 1 to 2 min | 400°F / 4 to 6 min | Revived, not rubbery |
| Frozen samosas or spring rolls | 2 to 3 min | 375°F / 8 to 10 min | Shatter crisp pastry |
| Jacket potato | 8 to 10 min | 360°F / 30 to 35 min (or combo) | Real crispy skin |
| Ready meal (crisp topped) | 4 to 6 min | 360°F / 15 to 18 min | Browned topping |
| Leftover fried chicken | 2 to 3 min | 375°F / 8 to 10 min | Restores the crust |
Times assume food straight from the fridge or freezer as noted. Lower wattage microwaves mean the microwave column runs longer, but the air fryer column stays the same.
Microwave to Air Fryer: Frequently Asked Questions
Multiply the microwave time by 2.5 to 3 and set the air fryer to 350 to 400°F depending on the food. A 4 minute microwave instruction becomes roughly 10 to 12 minutes in the air fryer. There is no temperature to convert because microwaves do not cook with heat settings.
Use 375°F for most frozen snacks and triple the shortest microwave time listed, shaking halfway. If the packet also gives oven instructions, convert those instead using the standard oven rule, since they translate more directly.
Only when texture matters. Fried, breaded, baked and roasted foods reheat dramatically better in the air fryer. Soups, stews, rice and steamed dishes reheat better and faster in the microwave. For thick items like jacket potatoes, using both, microwave first then air fryer, beats either alone.
Slightly. Packet times are usually written for 800 to 1000W microwaves. If your instruction was written for a lower wattage, the food needs a bit less air fryer time than triple, and the calculator above adjusts for this. The air fryer settings themselves never depend on your microwave.
